Photographing a family of 5 at James McFaul Park in Wyckoff

This Ridgewood family may look familiar because this is not their first appearance on this blog.  They’ve had a studio photo session with me, a family session in the fall a couple of years ago AND a newborn session when baby #3 join the family.  I was thrilled when they booked a family session when baby G.turned a year – I always love photographing returning clients and seeing how much ‘my newborns’ have changed:)  Baby G. was as sweet as she was at her newborn session but looked totally different – no surprise there:)  Big sister K. was as stylish as ever, posting and twirling for the camera.  And big brother C. did so well at this session – in the past he did not want much to do with me but at this session he enjoyed being photographed (well, as much as a toddler can ‘enjoy’ it) and gave me the best mischievous smiles:)

Mom looked absolutely AMAZING and picked out very stylish outfits for the whole family.  Seriously – don’t they look like they belong on pages of a fashion magazine?!  And Dad did not look too bad either:)

We chose to do their session at James McFaul park in Wyckoff – it is a beautiful location for photo sessions in the heart of Bergen county and it photographs well every season!

I love when my clients choose to print and display their photos and I was thrilled with a canvas collage of six canvases these guys ordered for their house – it looks simply stunning there and adds a great pop of color to their family room.

2017 Year in Pictures | Ridgewood photographer

At the beginning of each year I put together my Year in Pictures slideshow with images from all family and children sessions I’ve done prior year.  I love seeing all these images together, remembering laughter and silly faces.  I am a lucky lucky girl because I get to capture all these amazing memories for all these wonderful families!   This slideshow made me smile – watch it and I am sure it will put a smile on your face as well!

Fun Ridgewood family photo session with two boys and their parents

When I first met this Mom and Dad at their pre-session consultation we just clicked and I  knew that their family photo session would be tons of fun!  It was several months in the making but definitely worth the wait because it was even more fun than I thought it was going to be! This session had it all –  the yummiest made from scratch (by DAD!) organic bread, toy race car competition, a game of football, quality time of swings and climbing up slides and lots and lots of laughter.

And after spending some time at their home we headed to Ridgewood for a few portraits in one of my secret locations in downtown Ridgewood.  This spot does not look like much but the images there come out so well!

When the parents came in to my Ridgewood studio for their in-person viewing session to see images from their session they kept awwing and ooohing at every single image and Dad asked me if I knew that certain pictures would come out the way they did and told me that there was no way he could take pictures even closely resembling mine:)

They loved their images and ordered a whole lot of wall art including a beautiful collage of nine 12×12 acrylic prints to be displayed in their family room.  And when they saw the finished product there was even more awwing and oohing:)

Downtown Ridgewood photo session with older children

Being a Bergen county family photographer I mostly photograph families with young-ish children.  Parents want to get pictures of their newborn, babies, toddlers, little kids and come back to me year after year after year for those photos.   But once children reach a certain age – around 10 or so sessions become less frequent – kids are busy with after school activities and social lives and they just don’t change as much every year.   So while I do photograph tweens and teens I don’t do it often.  But it is always a treat when I do – it is nice to have an adult conversation with my subjects!  I believe these sessions are as important as sessions with young kids  – as they are only a few more years before ‘grown up’ children leave the nest and go to college and I think it is priceless to have these last few years together captured.

I loved meeting this family – Mom and Dad and I hit it off at their pre-session consultation.  They never had their family pictures taken and they wanted to remedy the situation before their oldest went to college.  And when I met the kids I loved them as well!  I imagine that as a teenager having a photographer follow you around and pose you in a public place may not be very comfortable or fun – but these boys did great!  They were funny and relaxed, naturals in front of the camera and very entertaining!  Mom and Dad were amazing together and I cannot get over the way this Dad looked at his wife – with so much love!

They are “in love with the photos” (their words!) and I have to say that I love the way they came out as well!  And I know that a beautiful canvas collage and individual canvases these guys ordered will bring make they smile for years to come!

Summer family photo session in Wyckoff

In this edition of Throw Back Thursday I bring you a summer family photo session that I did with a great family in Wyckoff – enjoy!

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you may noticed that I often write how much I loved a certain session or a family… and it may sound redundant when I say that time and time again but it does not make it any less true – I do love my families and the images I create for them.

Case in point is family/session – this was my first family photo shoot with them but I’ve known them for a while –  big sister S. is my Alexa’s best friend and because our kids get along so well we met up with the parents and would not you know – we get along great with them so now we are family friends!  And if that was not perfect enough – they also have a wheaten terrier and you know that since getting our Millie I’ve been obsessed with all things dog related:)

It seems that every parent comes to a photo session worried about their kids ‘behaving’ and I always reassure them that kids just need to be themselves – they don’t need to pose or smile on command at their photo sessions with me.   And once parents let go of their expectations of that their children should be doing we all start to have fun!

At this Wyckoff family photo shoot the parents were relaxed from the very beginning and their mood reflected in their kids.  The kids were being kids – happy, silly, loud, loving and I got to capture just that.  And while every family session I photograph is unique in its own way, what is common among all my family photo sessions is that I capture emotions and love and it makes me so happy to do that!

Looking at these images makes me smile and what’s even more important it made these parents smile:)  At their viewing/ordering session there were so may ‘awwwwws’ and at the end this Mom told me that these photographs were exactly what she wanted captured.  And to me there is no higher praise than that!
