And a baby makes FOUR – Ridgewood newborn photo session

Are you expecting a new bundle of joy and wondering what’s the best time to hold a newborn photo session?   Then you will love this TBT of this pretty awesome at home Ridgewood newborn photo session.

You may’ve heard that you need to do a newborn session as soon as possible after the baby is born – usually within first 10 days.  And I would definitely agree with that – if you would like to have sleepy cuddly posed baby images, that is.   A few days after the birth babies are still sleeping most of the time (although for a lot of them this sleeping occurs mostly during daytime hours and not at night!), are very moldable and that’s a perfect time to capture beautiful images of sleeping newborns.

My Bergen county photography studio, located in Ridgewood, is perfect for these types of sessions – it has great natural light (and studio lighting equipment for cloudy days), lots of space for everybody to spread out and plenty of props to choose from.  With these sessions I focus primary on the baby (and capture all beautiful details of them!) but there are also plenty of images with parents, brothers and sisters and a grandparents if they are there for the session.

If posed studio newborn images are not what you are looking for, then a great alternative is an at-home lifestyle photo session.  These photo sessions are very different from Ridgewood studio newborn sessions that I offer.  With these sessions the focus is on the family – snuggling up with the new baby in the family room, rocking her to sleep in her nursery, hanging out on a big family bed together.  If you spent time setting up and decorating the baby’s nursery, if you have special meaningful pieces of furniture or art that you would like to include in the session – this is a great session to do that.  And if you have other children then this is the session I would definitely recommend over a studio newborn session because we would also be able to capture your other kid(s) in their natural habitat – playing with their toys, reading their favorite books, monkeying around – and doing all their favorite things.  Think of this session as a family session with a newborn focus:)

I recommend scheduling lifestyle family photo sessions about 6-8 weeks after the baby is born.  By this time the baby is more alert and awake and makes more eye contact and has a lot more personality.  Some of them even smile when they look at their parent – and who would not want to capture their babies first smiles on camera?!  Waiting a bit after the birth also gives parents (especially the Moms) a bit more time to recover from delivery and get settled into a life with a newborn.

So the type of  a newborn photo session you should choose really depends on the type of images you would like me to capture.  But I promise you that you will be happy with the results no matter the session type:)

This Ridgewood family opted for an at-home lifestyle photo session at their home.  We were going back and forth about the timing of it and in the end they took my advice and scheduled it for when baby G. was about 8 weeks old.  The parents absolutely loved the images we captured!

There was lots of laughter:

and snuggles:

There were beautiful moments shared between these parents:

and a stunning little girl:

There was plenty of time for big brother G. to play with his dad:

and some quality Daddy/Daughter time:

and there was enough time hang out and read together as a family of four:

I absolutely loved meeting this family for their Ridgewood family session and cannot wait to watch these kids grow!

Photographing a family of 5 at James McFaul Park in Wyckoff

This Ridgewood family may look familiar because this is not their first appearance on this blog.  They’ve had a studio photo session with me, a family session in the fall a couple of years ago AND a newborn session when baby #3 join the family.  I was thrilled when they booked a family session when baby G.turned a year – I always love photographing returning clients and seeing how much ‘my newborns’ have changed:)  Baby G. was as sweet as she was at her newborn session but looked totally different – no surprise there:)  Big sister K. was as stylish as ever, posting and twirling for the camera.  And big brother C. did so well at this session – in the past he did not want much to do with me but at this session he enjoyed being photographed (well, as much as a toddler can ‘enjoy’ it) and gave me the best mischievous smiles:)

Mom looked absolutely AMAZING and picked out very stylish outfits for the whole family.  Seriously – don’t they look like they belong on pages of a fashion magazine?!  And Dad did not look too bad either:)

We chose to do their session at James McFaul park in Wyckoff – it is a beautiful location for photo sessions in the heart of Bergen county and it photographs well every season!

I love when my clients choose to print and display their photos and I was thrilled with a canvas collage of six canvases these guys ordered for their house – it looks simply stunning there and adds a great pop of color to their family room.

Fall family photos in Ridgewood and at Ho Ho Kus brook

Family photographer has always been my first love – I just love photographing families, capturing bonds between brothers and sisters, mothers and sons, dads and daughters.  Throw in a dog or two into the mix and I am in heaven!  And while I love my Ridgewood photo studio (it is great for so many different types of photoshoots) I truly believe that no location is as perfect for a family as their family home; noone feels more at home than well, at their home! 🙂

But I also love to incorporate families loves and interests in their sessions so I was beyond thrilled when these guys chose to split their photoshoot between their Ridgewood home and a fishing brook in the nearby Ho Ho Kus where they go fishing pretty often.  This session was a blast – little sister M. a natural in front of the camera – she was silly and was hamming it up for the camera – I can definitely see Broadway in her future! 🙂  Her big brother T was not that thrilled about the idea of having his pictures taken (I get it.. it may not seem like such an exciting prospect to a 10 year old) but I brought out my love for Harry Potter and we bonded over that instantly!  He was the one kept showing me cool tricks he could do on his bike and asking me to take pictures of him doing them!

And at the end of the session when I asked the kids what they thought of their photoshoot big brother T said it was ‘good’, which I think is the biggest compliment you can receive from a 5th grade boy!:)   And as if that was not enough this Mom told me that she loved having sessions with me (these guys are repeat clients) not only because pictures come out great but because I really get kids and that’s the reason why I can capture images that truly reflect who these kids are.. And that, my friends, is exactly what I strive to do!

Bergen County Christmas Photo Session | Ridgewood photo studio

My FIFTH year of offering Christmas mini sessions at my Ridgewood photo studio is off to a great start – since my first mini sessions this year on November 16th I’ve met and photographed many ‘old’ and new clients.   And holiday sets I have at the studio (cookies in bed, giant snowflakes, Christmas lights) have proven to be very popular among kids – both young and not so young.

Ms. G. is one of my oldest clients and I always have a blast photographing her.. When she was 4 or 5 I showed her a picture I took of her and she said “Ms. Lena, you are a good picture-taker!” – and I’ve been trying to be a good ‘picture taker’ for her since then:)  For her Christmas mini session last year Ms. G brought her own prop – a blanket – she thought it would go well with my theme (which it did!).  This year she took it one step further and bought a live prop – her adorable dog – Shaggy.  And I got to say that I LOVED photographing her with her live prop and think that we should incorporate Shaggy in all sessions moving forward:)

If you live in Bergen County and looking to have holiday pictures taken of your children reach out to me ASAP.  I offer Christmas and Holiday photos of children and families at my Bergen County photo studio located in Ridgewood NJ.
