And a baby makes FOUR – Ridgewood newborn photo session

Are you expecting a new bundle of joy and wondering what’s the best time to hold a newborn photo session?   Then you will love this TBT of this pretty awesome at home Ridgewood newborn photo session.

You may’ve heard that you need to do a newborn session as soon as possible after the baby is born – usually within first 10 days.  And I would definitely agree with that – if you would like to have sleepy cuddly posed baby images, that is.   A few days after the birth babies are still sleeping most of the time (although for a lot of them this sleeping occurs mostly during daytime hours and not at night!), are very moldable and that’s a perfect time to capture beautiful images of sleeping newborns.

My Bergen county photography studio, located in Ridgewood, is perfect for these types of sessions – it has great natural light (and studio lighting equipment for cloudy days), lots of space for everybody to spread out and plenty of props to choose from.  With these sessions I focus primary on the baby (and capture all beautiful details of them!) but there are also plenty of images with parents, brothers and sisters and a grandparents if they are there for the session.

If posed studio newborn images are not what you are looking for, then a great alternative is an at-home lifestyle photo session.  These photo sessions are very different from Ridgewood studio newborn sessions that I offer.  With these sessions the focus is on the family – snuggling up with the new baby in the family room, rocking her to sleep in her nursery, hanging out on a big family bed together.  If you spent time setting up and decorating the baby’s nursery, if you have special meaningful pieces of furniture or art that you would like to include in the session – this is a great session to do that.  And if you have other children then this is the session I would definitely recommend over a studio newborn session because we would also be able to capture your other kid(s) in their natural habitat – playing with their toys, reading their favorite books, monkeying around – and doing all their favorite things.  Think of this session as a family session with a newborn focus:)

I recommend scheduling lifestyle family photo sessions about 6-8 weeks after the baby is born.  By this time the baby is more alert and awake and makes more eye contact and has a lot more personality.  Some of them even smile when they look at their parent – and who would not want to capture their babies first smiles on camera?!  Waiting a bit after the birth also gives parents (especially the Moms) a bit more time to recover from delivery and get settled into a life with a newborn.

So the type of  a newborn photo session you should choose really depends on the type of images you would like me to capture.  But I promise you that you will be happy with the results no matter the session type:)

This Ridgewood family opted for an at-home lifestyle photo session at their home.  We were going back and forth about the timing of it and in the end they took my advice and scheduled it for when baby G. was about 8 weeks old.  The parents absolutely loved the images we captured!

There was lots of laughter:

and snuggles:

There were beautiful moments shared between these parents:

and a stunning little girl:

There was plenty of time for big brother G. to play with his dad:

and some quality Daddy/Daughter time:

and there was enough time hang out and read together as a family of four:

I absolutely loved meeting this family for their Ridgewood family session and cannot wait to watch these kids grow!

And a baby makes FIVE | Newborn family photo session in Ridgewood

It was a beautiful spring day when I ran into a client of mine in Ridgewood and she shared very exciting news – they were expecting a new baby!  I always get so emotional and excited when I hear news like that!  As you can imagine I could hardly wait to photograph beautiful Ms. G.  For local Ridgewood families I offer an option for a combo newborn session.  We start a newborn session at my Ridgewood photography studio – which is absolutely perfect for traditional posed cuddly sleepy newborn photos.  My Ridgewood studio has great natural light (and in case the weather does not cooperate I have backup of studio lights so we are always covered!) and nice props to use for a newborn session.   With newborn sessions I always get images of parents with a brand new baby – I just love first family portraits!   And true to my style even these semi-posed images are very natural and fun.  And then we head over to a family’s home for the lifestyle portion of the photo shoot.  And that part is my favorite part of the session – I love capturing new parents in their own home, documenting baby nurseries, and all the special touches and details that went into setting them up.

These guys wanted to get traditional newborn photos (who would not want one of these for their birth announcements!) but were excited to do the at-home part of the session as well.    So after spending some time at the my photo studio with Ms. G. making her big photo debut, Big Sister K. and Big Brother C. joined for a few family photos before heading to their beautiful home.  The nursery is absolutely STUNNING – it seriously looks like it is taken directly from pages of a catalog.  And what made it even more special was having this beautiful baby in it!   After this Mom saw a sneak peek of a picture taken in the nursery she sent me this email : ” OMG! What a fabulous photo!! I love, love, love it! This picture looks like it belongs in a magazine 🙂 I can’t wait to see the rest.  Lena, your work is beautiful, the images you capture are amazing!  A session with you is worth every penny! ”  Needless to say, it made my day:)

I absolutely love photographing these guys – they are nice, happy, loving and very photogenic and I cannot wait to photograph them again in 2017!

At home newborn photo session in Bergen County

Live Love Laugh Photos Ridgewood photography studio is a great place for newborn sessions – there is plenty of room, great lights, lots of cute hats, hair accessories and blankets to choose from – I love holding newborn sessions there.  But there is something to be said about on-location at-home lifestyle newborn sessions.  I don’t do them very often but when I do – I really enjoy them!

So when would you choose an at-home lifestyle newborn sessions vs a studio newborn photo session?  If you want to focus on your adorable cuddly new bundle of joy and get lots of sleepy images of your naked baby, focusing on tiny toes and fingers, squshy cheeks and long eye lashes  – then a studio photo session the right option for you – and our Ridgewood photo studio is a great place to have your newborn photo session.   Will there be pictures of Mommy and Daddy with their new addition?  Of course there will be!  With a studio session you don’t need to worry about anything – you just bring your baby and your diaper bag and I will take care of the rest.

At home newborn sessions are a little different.  First of all these sessions are best done a bit later than studio sessions – usually within 4 to 8 weeks.  During this time your baby is a bit more awake, more aware of his or her surroundings and his personality starts to shine through.  This also give Mom a bit more time to recover from not-so-easy task for bringing a new human into this world!  At home lifestyle sessions are more relaxed and laid back than studio – they are all about capturing you and your baby in your home, doing what you do best – cuddling and gazing into your baby’s eyes! 🙂  There will be images of the baby, (don’t worry, you will have plenty of options for your birth announcements!) but these images are not as posed as studio ones.  At home photo sessions are great to capture you in your home, surrounded by your favorite things and people.

I was thrilled when this Mom reached out to me and asked me to photograph her newborn twins.  I love all babies but newborn twins (and twin girls!) have a very special place in my heart:)  When I first saw them I think I squeeled with joy – they were so perfect and dainty – they looked like beautiful dolls!  And even at the tender age of 4 weeks these girls had very different personalities – one was more laid back and another one demanded a bit more attention:)  They were equally sweet though and I absolutely loved spending a morning with them in their stunning nursery (seriously, this place looks like it belongs in a magazine!) and capturing them being bathed in love by their Mom and Dad!
