Do as I Do

As with many family photographers out there, photography is not my first career.  I went to a good school (NYU) and got a very practical degree – in Computer Science.  While in college I never really thought about what I wanted to do when I ‘grow up’… I just got a degree that had  great career opportunities, and paid well.  I worked with many great companies and got wonderful experience but after doing IT consulting for a few years I realized I did not have a passion for it …

So when Mia and Alexa were born and I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do now that I was grown up, I realized that my perfect career was there right in front it me – it was photography!  I’ve always loved it – Victor and I took thousands of pictures during our world travels, and I was told that I had a good eye for it.   It took many many many many hours of learning, being challenged, etc but I am so thrilled that I ‘ve made the switch!

Besides doing what I LOVE to do for a living, I do believe that photography, especially family photography, is so important.  Now that I am a Mom, I know first-hand how quickly children change – from a sleepy newborn to a cuddly baby to a very energetic toddler to an opinionated child…  Photographs allow us to capture and freeze these moments, to be able to relive them years later when your baby looses her baby fat and turns into a little girl, when your baby boy turns into a teenager and does not want to do much with you.   And what’s even more important I think is to be able to capture family connections – hanging out, laughing, playing together.  So many times I hear Moms tell me that they don’t want to be in pictures because they are not thrilled with the way they look, they still have some baby weight to get rid of, etc.  And I tell them time and time again that it is not important what they look like – it is important to capture them together as a family, that they will look at these images years down the road and will be so happy to see themselves in them.   And it is even more important for children – seeing their parents with them, seeing how much they are loved …

As you can imagine, I have A TON of pictures of Mia and Alexa… But I do what I preach and every year we have our family session… It is always great for me to be on the other side of the camera and be a client for a change.  So I definitely understand the anxiety over finding the perfect outfits for everybody, hoping that your kids don’t have a meltdown, waiting patiently to see your images and pouring over them when they become available:)

This year a friend of mine – super talented Sarah from Sara Jordan Photography did our family session.  She is awesome – as you can see from the images:)  If you are ever in Boston you gotta look her up!
